What makes this program important?
Children who are learning to read often experience anxiety when reading aloud to an adult or a peer. Trained therapy dogs provide listeners who don’t interrupt, who don’t laugh when a child makes a mistake, and who aren’t quick to correct or fill in long pauses. Dogs are simply thrilled to be receiving attention and they never judge. A recent study done at UC Davis demonstrated increased skill and confidence among children who read with a therapy dog on a regular basis. The library is thrilled to provide this opportunity to our young readers.
